Collaborative Research Umbrella is a well-defined and focused research theme, leading to a collection of interrelated and progressively conducted possible thesis research topics. The title of each research theme remains unchanged during the AUN/SEED-Net Project period of five years, although annual proposals would update a collection of a few theses topics to be conducted by AUN/SEED-Net students during the year. The framework of research themes and possible thesis topics under each research theme should be “master planned” by the Host Institution in consent with Japanese Field Coordinating University(s) by taking account of discussions with and suggestions by other Member Institutions (MIs), particularly Sending Institutions (SIs) of students. It is intended that all AUN/SEED-Net students are (and especially doctoral sandwich students must be) included in the Collaborative Research so that they will receive significant Japanese support to their thesis research.

In the nine engineering fields, the research umbrella may involve both fundamental fields and interdisciplinary areas that are addressed as the common critical issues of ASEAN. Below is the list of collaborative research umbrellas under the AUN/SEED-Net Network.
