During the Preparatory Stage (2001-2002) to Phase 1 (2003-2007), the AUN/SEED-Net Project aimed to enhance educational and research capacities of Member Institutions with the following expected outputs:
1. Faculty qualifications are upgraded through acquisition of graduate degrees;
2. Host graduate programs are enhanced;
3. Joint activities and human linkage among Member Institutions are promoted through networking activities;
4. Iinformation dissemination system, activity management system, and communication network are established.
At the end of Phase I, the project objectives were mostly achieved through active exchanges of resources among the Member Institutions and stronger relationship with the Japanese Supporting University Consortium. The Project also created numerous outputs as listed below.

The Network also initiated collaboration among the Member Institutions and the Japanese
Supporting Universities to develop human resources and research in critical areas. For examples, the Workshop on Disaster
Mitigation and Management in ASEAN Countries was arranged in 2005 in Phuket, Thailand; the Distance Learning Program on Earthquake
Engineering has been run since 2005 between Chulalongkorn University and Tokyo Institute of Technology; and the special support
was provided for the Emergency Response Program to the Java earthquake conducted by Gadjah Mada University, Kyushu University and
Kyoto University.

Phase II of the AUN/SEED-Net Project (2008-2012) has been built on the achievements of Phase I
and the expectations towards the future of the Project by the Member Institutions. The goal of this phase is to establish a
sustainable framework of human resource development network in engineering field, aiming at contributing to the ASEAN region’s
development, under the ownership of the member countries. Four outputs expected in this phase are:
1. Capacity enhancement of the member institutions
2. Collaborative research for industry and community
3. Further strengthening of engineering network
4. Preparation for the Japan-ASEAN Graduate School Consortium of Engineering
Significantly, the Network has extended its outreach to involve non-member institutions as well as industrial and
government sectors, to empower the AUN/SEED-Net alumni network, and to set out interdisciplinary research on the region’s
common issues namely Biotechnology, Disaster Mitigation & Management, Global Environment, Natural Resources & Materials, and
New or Renewable Energy. |
